Merry Christmas

Christmas morning has always been my favorite morning of the year. I wake up, groggily make my way downstairs, my dad runs out and gets Starbucks (because he and my brother prefer it to the coffee maker at home), and then the four of us exchange gifts.

I’ve yet to loose my childhood enthusiasm for the holiday. It reminds me of being young and believing in Santa, which I fervently believed in, and defended, until about 7th grade (OKAY, I have an over active imagination AND a yearning to hold on to all that’s magical and innocent).

During Christmas Eve and Christmas day, the child in me comes back to life, in full force. Last night during mass, I enviously watched a little girl dressed as an angel (I want that outfit!) singing in the children’s choir. She belt her heart out with a big smile, not caring how she sounded. I thought, “Ah, now that is IT. She’s got it right:”

“This little light of mine,
I’m gonna let it shine.
This little light of mine,
I’m gonna let it shine.
This little light of mine,
I’m gonna let it shine.
Let it shine,
Let it shine,
Let it shine.”

Maybe it’s the Christmas spirit, or how people are brought together during the holidays to celebrate each other’s company and love, or maybe its the story of a child born and achieving enlightenment and going to a Church and singing with a community trying to find solace in their own personal story connected to the biblical one, but I always find my little light shining during the holidays.

Somewhere between my childhood and adult life there remains a pure spark, and I’m happy to let it shine today in full, unabashed, glory.

Happy Holidays to all! Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine…
